Beginners Map Reading and Mountain Navigation - 2 Day Skills Training Course

 (Certification  - you can choose to include a National Navigation Award). 

 

This two-day skills training course is designed to help you understand how to use a map and compass. Under expert guidance, you will recognise and understand features from map to ground. We'll spend time learning the basics to improve your navigation abilities and confidence on the ground. We'll include plenty of map reading challenges to ensure you can put your new skills into practice.  

 

The course provides a firm foundation for you to develop outdoor activities and consolidate your skills. With thousands of miles of trails, tracks, paths, hills and mountains to explore you'll be ready to navigate your own walks confidently and safely.

If you are looking to gain a certificate then, as an optional extra, we can ensure you reach sufficient skills level to attain a National Navigation Award.  Whether you're a seasoned walker or navigation novice this award will provide evidence of the skills you've attained.

  • North %u2013 True, Grid and Magnetic

  • Estimating distance

  • What to do when lost 

  • Planning a safe walk/route 

  • Safety in the mountain environment

Who is it suitable for: designed for complete beginners but also suitable for those with some experience, who recognise their limitations and wish to improve their performance.

This is a non-residential course but we can advise on accommodation or campsites.
